Tribute

Hugh Edward Cox, 88, of Maineville formally of Zanesville passed away Tuesday, March 7, 2023 at Hospice of Cincinnati, Blue Ash. Hugh was born October 13, 1934 in Sarahsville, OH to Hugh and Amelia Craft Cox.

Hugh served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He graduated from Sarahsville High School and received a Bachelor and Master Degree from Ohio University. Hugh retired after 35 years of teaching. He taught at Roseville High School, West Muskingum High School and Zanesville City Schools and was a student teacher supervisor at Muskingum University. Hugh loved teaching and said he could not think of any career he could have enjoyed more and most of his students agreed. Many of his students throughout the years would tell him how much they learned and how much they enjoyed his classes. He also volunteered at Bethesda Hospital for over 30 years, and at Zanesville City Elementary Schools. He loved doing both of these. Hugh was an active member of St. Nicholas Catholic Church for 62 years, where he served as a Eucharist minister, Altar server and taught CCD. Hugh’s faith was very important to him. He enjoyed fishing, golf, playing cards, puzzles and family vacations to the beach and mountains with Estelle, his children and grandsons. Hugh and Estelle moved to Maineville, OH to be closer to one of their sons because of health reasons in 2022.

Hugh is survived by his wife, Estelle Freese Cox, whom he married, July 30, 1960. They have two sons, David Hugh (Eileen) and Thomas Alan (Janet), four grandsons, Casey Alonzo, Jacob Thomas, Tyler Christopher, and Daniel James, and a great-granddaughter, Elizabeth “Lizzie” Rochelle.

In addition to his parents, Hugh was preceded in death by, a brother-in-law, Roger Forte.
